Sub title:
Theoretical models and methods for studying psychosocial processes in adolescence and emerging adulthood

Outline:
This course is aimed at providing students with a knowledge regarding psychosocial processes in adolescence and emerging adulthood. Theoretical models and empirical evidence covering core processes will be presented and discussed. In addition, different methods for the study of adolescence and emerging adulthood will be presented, with a strong focus on longitudinal, cross-cultural, and meta-analytic approaches. Finally, academic writing and the submission and review process will be discussed.

Attainment target:
The aim of this course is to help students to acquire an understanding of (a) the fundamental psychosocial processes typical of adolescence and emerging adulthood; (b) main principles of different research methods used in adolescent and emerging adult research; (c) notions about international academic writing.

  1. Introduction to adolescent psychology (8/1 Monday, 10.30-12)
  2. From adolescence to adulthood: The theory of emerging adulthood (8/1 Monday, 13-14.30)
  3. Identity formation in adolescence and emerging adulthood (8/1 Monday, 14.45-16.15)
  4. Identity, problem behaviors, and well-being (8/2 Tuesday, 9-10.30)
  5. The social contexts: family, peers, and school (8/2 Tuesday, 10.30-12)
  6. The social contexts: work and romantic relationships, social participation and civic engagement (8/2 Tuesday, 13-14.30)
  7. Cross-cultural perspectives on adolescence and emerging adulthood and a focus on adolescents and emerging adults in Japan (8/3 Wednesday, 9-10.30)
  8. Methods for studying adolescence and emerging adulthood: A focus on longitudinal approaches (8/3 Wednesday, 10.30-12)
  9. Methods for studying adolescence and emerging adulthood: A focus on cross-cultural approaches (8/3 Wednesday, 13-14.30)
  10. Methods for studying adolescence and emerging adulthood: A focus on meta-analytic approaches (8/4 Thursday, 9-10.30)
  11. Academic writing for international journals: The submission and review process (8/4 Thursday, 10.30-12)
  12. Questions & Answers; Final evaluation (8/4 Thursday, 13-14.30)
